Portable Freezer: Key Points to Look for Before Buying

Portable freezers are a great piece of technology which has been utilized by many for different requirements. It is not uncommon to find a portable freezer in the cab of a truck, or in the cabin of a boat, in the back of a jeep, used by tour bus operators, in apartments or in dorm rooms. The reason for this is the flexibility that they provide when people are travelling or have limited space. There are a couple of key elements that should be considered at by anyone looking to purchase a portable freezer.1) Define what the machine will be used for. If it is going to be used on a boat or in an RV for example; it will need to be able to withstand the environment. Some machines run on a reciprocating motor compressor and others use a swing motor compressor. The reciprocating motor has more parts and generally is not designed or able to withstand vibrations. The swing motor only has one dynamic part, is encased in steel and is vibration resistant. If however it will be used as a permanent fixture a reciprocating motor may do the trick.2) Power consumption is important to look at. Check with the manufacturer as to the amps required to run the machine. Depending on the maker of the freezer the requirements can vary. Obviously lower usage is better if you will be away from a fixed source of power for any length of time.3) Check and see if the portable freezer can run on both AC and DC power. DC is direct current and is produced by a battery; AC is alternating current as is produced at your home or business. It is important if you are to be using the freezer on your travels to make sure that it can run on batter power. Check with the supplier if the machine can automatically detect the type of power it is receiving and adjust accordingly. Some machines will be able change between DC and AC automatically; others will require you to manually change it.4) Check the noise that the portable freezer will make. The noise limit will be defined by what the machine will be used for. Freezers can operate between 40 - 60 decibels. If the freezer will be in close proximity to people trying to sleep a low decibel producing machine should be preferred.5) The set out of the bucket in the portable freezer. Some machines will have two compartments allowing for freezing and refrigeration simultaneously, while others will only allow for the machine to do one or the other. These are just a few key points to consider when purchasing a portable freezer. Make sure you check the vibration resistance, the power consumption, the ability to run on DC and AC power and the amount of noise the freezer makes before making any purchase.
